This crank seal plate was designed to prevent the N54 from eating shredded serpentine belts.
With out this plate you are left with a high bill for replacing the front main seal, and an oil pan gasket job.
The worst thing that can happen is the belt goes into your oil pan and clogs up the oil pick up tube causing oil starvation.
